Notable ETF Movers of the Day 07/14: (VXX) (XLE) (FXE) Higher; (UNG) (EWZ) (OIH) Lower
Gainers
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 2.57 percent to $23.15. The CBOE VIX recently turned positive as Italy passes a key austerity package. Further, Fed Chair Ben Bernanke is also emphasizing that the Fed will step in should the U.S. recovery falter.
- Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) up 0.15 percent to $75.46. The ETF is being held up by ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) today, which announced that it would split into two separate companies. ConocoPhillips is 4.5 percent higher on the session.
- CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) up 0.20 percent to $141.14. Though issues still linger in the region, the euro is showing signs of strength on Italy's austerity package.
- United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 0.18 percent to $11.01. EIA data today shows that nat gas stores rose last week by 84 billion cubic feet, more than 76 bcf expected by analysts and economists. August contracts are $0.039 lower to $4.364 on the Comex.
- iShares MSCI Brazil Index (NYSE: EWZ) down 1.13 percent to $69.80. The Bovespa is trading 1.49 percent lower as Moody's warned that it could downgrade it's debt rating on the U.S. to Aaa, and European worries continue to linger. China is still looking strong, and keeping Brazil in check. China is the number one consumer of Brazilian commodities.
- Oil Services HOLDRs (NYSE: OIH) down 0.61 percent to $150.28. Though economic indicators were positive, comments from Bernanke and the looming deadline to raise the debt ceiling are causing concern today. Weatherford International, Ltd. (NYSE: WFT) is leading the ETF lower, down 2.4 percent on the session.
