Analysts are warning that embattled oil giant BP (NYSE: BP) must break-up or face a takeover.

Analysts at Investec called for a "radical, full demerger of BP", according to The Guardian.

"Bob Dudley should go the whole hog and hive off the US (Amoco) and North Sea (Britoil) businesses to renew BP – no longer 'Beyond Petroleum' but as 'Bric-ish Petroleum' – a higher growth global player focused on the investment challenges of 2030 – not 1930," the firm said.

The analyst warns that if BP does not close the discount, "the Russians, Chinese or Indians will look hard at the sub 6x multiple."

Shares of BP are up 2.5 percent today after announcing a $1.07 settlement with Mitsui's subsidiary MOEX over the gulf oil spill that will be applied to the $20 billion Deepwater Horizon Trust.
