Notable ETF Movers of the Day 05/13: (UUP) (VXX) (SLV) Higher; (XLF) (UNG) (TAN) Lower
Gainers
- PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.28 percent to $21.60. The U.S. dollar is gaining today as investors are bullish on U.S. economic data offset by mixed earnings yesterday. Consumer confidence increased to 72.4 in May, according to the University of Michigan, compared with 69.8 in April. Also, CPI increased 0.4 percent, right in line with estimates.
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 0.73 percent to $23.48. The CBOE VIX is a little higher as the Philly Fed number of 3.2 percent growth was shy of the economist estimate calling for 3.5 percent. The index is up 2.9 percent today.
- iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV) up 3.30 percent to $34.42. The ETF is making a rapid rise, though silver July contracts are just 1.5 percent higher to $35.345 per ounce. Silver saw some pressure this week, providing a buying opportunity for investors.
- Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 1.09 percent to $15.82. Commidity prices are weighing today, expected to pressure the consumer. The ETF is being led by JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM) and Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) today, both nearly 2 percent lower.
- United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 0.56 percent to $10.75. Forecasts have more moderate temps across much of the U.S. for the next week, putting off the need for air conditioning. Additionally, the seasonal pricing shift is taking effect.
- Guggenheim Solar (NYSE: TAN) down 1.71 percent to $8.06. Solars are a little weaker today after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said solar subsidies are too high.
