May 12, 2011 11:55 AM EDT
Gainers

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 0.21 percent to $53.65. Bolstered today by Kohl's Corp. (NYSE: KSS), which reported strong first quarter results today. Kohl's had EPS of $0.73 on revs of $4.162 billion, mixed to the consensus, and also boosted its FY11 EPS outlook.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 1.83 percent to $23.97. Commodities are pressuring markets today, with traders exiting more risky bets on potential economic recovery. Additionally, earnings from Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) did little to quell concerns for the tech giant. Though issuing a third-quarter earnings beat, fourth quarter was still a little foggy for CEO John Chambers et al.

  • SPDR S&P Metals & Mining (NYSE: XME) up 0.37 percent to $69.99. Led by Allegheny Technologies Inc. (NYSE: ATI), which was upgraded by Goldman Sachs. Shares are 2.6 percent higher on the day.

Receders

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 0.37 percent to $10.76. EIA data has natural gas stockpiles increasing 70 billion cubic feet last week, compared with the 67 - 71 bcf that analysts were expecting. At 1.827 trillion cubic feet, stores are about 2 percent below the five-year average of 1.864 tcf and 12 percent below 2.076 trillion cubic feet for the same period last year.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 1.56 percent to $38.74. The International Energy Agency reports that high commodity prices and weaker economic projections are eroding crude demand growth in the U.S.

  • iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV) down 3.31 percent to $33.26. Silver is continuing lower today as commodities may be experiencing a major correction following a stellar price movement that brought not only silver, but also gold, to new highs. Silver is $1.550 lower to $33.965 per ounce on the Comex for July delivery. Silver dropped from above $38 per ounce yesterday, and highs above $50 earlier in May.
