According to reports from the WSJ over the weekend, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) could be looking to make a $20 billion offer for Switzerland's Synthes, one of the top competitors in the market for orthopedic devices.
Such a purchase would mark Johnson & Johnson's largest-ever acquisition and give the company a foothold in the $5.5 billion trauma market.
Synthes manufactures and distributes instruments, implants and biomaterials for the surgical fixation and regeneration of human skeleton and its soft tissues, and products for operative treatment of bone fractures.
While the situation is fluid and "fragile" according to one source, market players have already brought up possible regulatory scrutiny as a deal could have a combined company controlling more than half of the trauma market.
Shares of J&J are flat at $60.56.
