Notable ETF Movers of the Day 04/13: (EWY) (UNG) (SLV) Higher; (VXX) (XLF) (XRT) Lower

Gainers

  • iShares MSCI South Korea Index (NYSE: EWY) up 2.51 percent to $64.83. South Korea's Kospi Index (KOSPI) increased as potential for global recovery outpaced fears stemming from Japan on a recently upgraded radiation outlook stemming from the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster. South Korean, as well as Chinese, automakers are seen gaining some benefit from part supply disruptions in Japan.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 1.40 percent to $10.87. Natural gas futures are on the rise today, bolstered by better than expected retail reports in the U.S. and data from the EIA that industrial demand for gas will increase 3.6 percent this year, to the highest level its been since 2004. May 2011 contracts are up $0.053 to $4.151 per mmBtu on the Comex. Retail sales, excluding automotive, increased 0.8 percent, better than the 0.7 percent that analysts were looking for.

  • iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV) up 1.41 percent to $39.64. The gold alternative is seeing some buying today following a recent dip in prices which sent the ETF lower since March 11th. Some believe that global strife has put a cap on increasing silver and gold prices, but record highs have been reached by each over the last several weeks making each an attractive target on the dips.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 0.41 percent to $28.80. The CBOE VIX is lower today, as economic data is supporting a positive market attitude today. The VIX near-term index is just about 0.6 percent lower this afternoon.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 0.61 percent to $16.30. Traders mixed on which direction to go with the financials following JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM) earnings this morning. JPM reported EPS of $1.28 on revs of $25.8 billion, topping consensus EPS of $1.16 and revs of $25.48 billion. The report wasn't enough to keep financials in the green today, with many dipping into negative territory this afternoon.

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) down 0.54 percent to $51.38. The ETF is being led lower today by Expedia (Nasdaq: EXPE), which is reacting to an AMR (NYSE: AMR) lawsuit against peer Orbitz Worldwide (NYSE: OWW) and Travelport. Expedia is trading 1.5 percent lower this afternoon. Overall the retail sector is lower amid retail sales numbers for March.
