Notable ETF Movers of the Day 04/12: (VXX) (FXE) (FAA) Higher; (SPY) (USO) (XLE) Lower

Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 2.79 percent to $29.45. The CBOE VIX is trading higher on resurgence of nuclear worries in Japan, as its Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency increased the severity rating on the disaster at Fukushima to seven, the same severity of the 1986 Chernobyl tragedy. The CBOE VIX is up about 10 percent today.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) up 0.2 percent to $144.00. The euro supported by reports China reiterating its commitment to buy Spanish debt and higher interest rates are expected to blossom over the next several weeks, making the euro a more attractive investment.

  • Guggenheim Airline (NYSE: FAA) up 1.60 percent to $34.94. Airlines reversing some of their losses today, as crude prices are falling as Saudi Arabia said it was cutting output by 500,000 barrels per day, citing weak demand. Oil prices surged to north of the $110 price level over the last several weeks in turmoil in North Africa and the Middle East. The International Energy Agency also cautioned that the price surge would curb demand. Airlines have been hit as investors and traders were trying to price in the potential of increased fuel costs.


Receders

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) down 1.04 percent to $131.08 and PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq: QQQ) down 0.95 percent to $56.22. Markets lower today on news out of Japan, offsetting increased export and import prices. Export prices, excluding agriculture, increased 1.3 percent, while import prices, excluding oil, gained 0.6 percent. Both were higher on a sequential basis. The U.S. trade deficit also narrowed, to $45.8 billion. The number missed the economist's outlook for consolidation to $44 billion.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 2.70 percent to $42.46. Along with aforementioned crude news (see FAA), Goldman Sachs sees a pullback in Brent crude to $105 per barrel. Brent contracts are currently hovering around the $120 price level.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) down 3.09 percent to $75.73. Energy stocks pulling back along with crude today. Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) is adding pressure, following an announcement after the market closed yesterday that it sees first-quarter earnings higher sequentially, but downstream earnings slightly lower than compared to the fourth-quarter and upstream earnings improving between sequential quarters.
