Barclays on U.S. IT Consulting & Computer Services: Key Takeaways from Barclays Capital Emerging Payments Forum

Barclays analyst says, "At the Barclays Capital Emerging Payments Forum, discussions on evolving mobile payments largely reaffirmed our view of an open architecture, characterized by consumer choice, interoperability, and partnerships among a variety of vendors, and confirmed that NFC is gaining material traction in the market. We provide further discussion below, along with more detailed feedback from company presentations. The top four mobile operating system players (Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM)) represent 93% of the market. Nearly all of these players have indicated plans to roll out NFC phones in the near term, and most presenters noted an expectation for a meaningful wave of NFC-capable handset roll-outs by the end of 2011."

"Visa (NYSE: V) and MasterCard (NYSE: MA) cited various factors driving their continued value in a mobile payment ecosystem, including widespread merchant acceptance, reliable technology, strong relationships with banks, and access to data on consumer buying patterns."

"Key Stocks: We continue to view VeriFone (NYSE: PAY) as a key beneficiary of emerging payments trends. Leading chipset vendors and many possible new entrants (e.g. GOOG, eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY), AAPL) were referenced throughout the day as key potential players in the payments market, while presentations also highlighted for us the difficulty of disintermediating incumbents in the payments industry (e.g. V, MA, Total System (NYSE: TSS), Global Payments (NYSE: GPN)) who are likely to continue playing a key role, in our view. We believe Western Union (NYSE: WU), Fiserv (Nasdaq: FISV), and Alliance Data (NYSE: ADS) are well positioned to benefit from growth in mobile/online channels."
