Notable ETF Movers of the Day 03/25: (XRT) (MOO) (EWZ) Higher; (VXX) (EWJ) (FXE) Lower

Gainers

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 1.44% to $50.17. On the cusp of a 52-week high, retailers are seeing upside today as GDP revisions came in better than expected, and the Fed alluded to QE2 being the end of its bond-buying stimulus program. GDP for Q410 was revised at 3.1%, topping consensus views calling for 2.9%. Additionally, Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank President Dennis Lockhart said that the U.S. economic recovery was on solid grounf, and that extending the federal stimulus program would be "unlikely." Notably, priceline.com (Nasdaq: PCLN) was rocking earlier, pushing up 2.8% to a 52-week high of $489.40.

  • Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO) up 1.09% to $55.47. Potash Corp. (NYSE: POT) leading the charge today, up about 3.5%. News today has BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP) directing about $10 billion towards Australia to inprove their operations there, making an acquisition of a potash mining company more unlikely now. Jim Cramer was also bullish on Potash yesterday, calling it a "better pick" than CNH Global NV (NYSE: CNH).

  • iShares MSCI Brazil Index (NYSE: EWZ) up 0.81% to $75.81. Might be more bargain buying going on on the Bovespa today, following positive U.S. economic data and potential business for Brazail as Japan commences their multi-billion dollar reconstruction effort. The Bovespa is up about 0.8% currently.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 2.20% to $29.74. The CBOE VIX near-term index is trading lower again today, sedngin the ETF down about 24% since mid-March. Investors buying in today on positive economic data a slightly lower crude prices.

  • iShares MSCI Japan Index (NYSE: EWJ) down 1.32% to $10.44. Comments from Japan’s Prime Minister Naoto Kan, stating that the nuclear reactor recovery efforts haven't reached a point where the government can let down its guard, is adding pressure to the Japan ETF today. "We’re trying to prevent a deterioration of the situation,” Kan said in a public address in Tokyo yesterday. “We must continue to work with a high sense of alertness on each development." Though not near lows hit a few weeks ago, Japan ETF is still off about $1 from levels seen before the March 11th earthquake stuck off the eastern coast of the island nation, sending havoc throughout.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) down 0.18% to $140.87. Euro showing weakness versus the U.S. dollar today, as concerns over Portugal's debt and bank stress test results (due out next week) are causing investors to exit the currency for safer havens. The EUR/USD index is down about 0.26% to $1.4144.
