Shares of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT) opened at $53.75 at the beginning of this week, but are not currently trading at $50.55, down 6% on the weak and 5 % on the day. This comes after the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said on Thursday it was seeking public comment on the proposed certification of General Electric (NYSE: GE) and Hitachi Nuclear Energy's Economic Simplified Boiling-Water Reactor (ESBWR) design for use in the United States.
Reuters states that in a press release, the NRC stated that the public had 75 days to comment on safety issues, among other things, for the proposed new ESBWR design. DTE Energy Inc. (NYSE: DTE) commented that it wants to use the ESBWR design in a new reactor proposed for Michigan, but has not made a final decision to build the new reactor.
The NRC said it planned to make a final decision on the ESBWR design in late 2011 as well as a modified version of the AP1000.
