Notable ETF Movers of the Day 03/21: (XLK) (XLE) (FXI) Higher; (VXX) (UUP) Lower

Gainers

  • Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLK) up 2.09% to $25.42. Moving higher today following yesterday's announcement of AT&T (NSE: T) signing an agreement to acquire T-Mobile from Deutsche Telekom in a $39 billion deal. QUALCOMM Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM) is leading the ETF higher today, up 3.7% today.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) up 2.68% to $77.41. Energy sector again seeing some upside as tensions in Libya have increased again following air strikes in the North African OPEC member over the weekend. Anadarko also announced a multi-billion Texas asset sale to Korea National Oil Corp.

  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) up 2.38% to $42.67. China markets surging Monday amid a rate hike by the central bank that was largely priced in, and amid rising oil prices following further conflicts in Libya.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 6.84% to $32.94. Markets continuing a strong rebound today, as oil prices are surging on further conflict in Libya and M&A over the weekend is inspiring investor confidence and reducing volatility. Nuclear power concerns in Japan may also be cooling a little today, as the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said that the crisis at Tepco's Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant "is on the verge of stabilizing."

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.14% to $21.69. Invetors reducing their holdings in safe harbor investments like currency today, as markets look to regain losses suffered early last week following the massive earthquake in Japan, and subsequent tsunami. The U.S. dollar is trading lower versus the euro and pound, and stronger versus the yen today. Last week, the G-7 moved in to assit in curbing the rapid appreciation of the yen, a move the Group hadn't made since 2000 when they worked to stablize the then-new euro.
