Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) To Divest PC Business?

March 10, 2011 12:01 PM EST
Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) could possibly sell off its PC unit to Samsung.

According to a report in China's Commercial Times, which was featured on Digitimes, notes that Hewlett-Packard has also had contact with other companies such as Lenovo and Foxconn Electronics, but Samsung will likely be able to offer a higher price for the unit.

With Samsung having a major presence in LCD TV and mobile handset lines, the Commercial Times said that the acquisition of Hewlett-Packard's PC business would help to fill in the gap that it is missing.

Digitimes points out that rumors of the divestiture of Hewlett-Packard's PC business have been circulating around Taiwan's IT market since Q410, but any deals have since been called off.

Finally, Commercial Times reports that Hewlett-Packard's CEO, Leo Apotheker, recently said that they would be adopting webOS into future PC products in order to further challenge Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), meaning that a sale of the unit would be contradictory to its current strategy.

H-P shares are currently trading 0.9% lower on the day.
