Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 4.62% to $33.74. One of the few non-leveraged ETFs in the green today, holdings are being spiked by increased volatility in the markets on jobless claims, weak Chinese economic news, and a downgrade of Spain's debt. China recorded a trade deficit of $7.3 billion in February, from $6.5 billion of a surplus in January. Exports in China grew at 2.4% while imports rose 19.4%. Exports were 37.7% in January, and imports 51%. Moody's lowered their rating on Spain's debt from Aa1 to Aa2 with a negative outlook. Jobless claims increased by 26K from the prior reading, wider than the 11K than the Street was looking for.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.73% to $22.18. Gaining versus most currencies today, following Spain's debt downgrade at Moody's and China's tepid economic data. The U.S. dollar is a typical safe haven investment versus market volatility, and it appears that investors are even eschewing gold today for the currency.

Receders
  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) down 1.47% to $130.46 and PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq:
QQQQ) down 1.44% to $56.21. Broader markets are trading lower today, as economic data is enough to offset receding crude prices. Crude is down $2.92 to $101.46 per barrel on the Comex, but aforementioned jobless claims, and increasing trade deficit are causing investors to take profits just one day after the two year anniversary of teh recent market bottom.

SPDR S&P Metals & Mining (NYSE: XME) down 2.52% to $67.72. Weak today after China's reported a record trade deficit of $7.3 billion in February. Exports slowed during the Lunar New Year, while imports surged in the country with the rising price of raw materials.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 2.48% to $10.21. The EIA reported a 71 billion cubic foot decline in stores, less than expectations for a 78 - 82 Bcf decline. April 11 contracts are down $0.102 to $3.828/mmBtu on the Comex.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) down 2.84% to $74.44. Energy stocks getting hit following the recent runs in crude, as oil is now pulling back as investors and traders are looking to the recent increase in crude inventory rather than the conflict in Libya. Yesterday, the EIA reported a surprise 2.5 million barrel increase, a swing from the 364K barrel drop seen in the prior week. Average U.S. gasoline prices have increased 12.5% to $3.513 per gallon, compared to the same period in February.
