Notable ETF Movers of the Day 03/03: (EWY) (XLF) (XLK) Higher; (VXX) (UNG) (USO) Lower

Gainers

  • iShares MSCI South Korea Index (NYSE: EWY) up 2.19% to $59.14. Stocks on the Kospi Index rallied as South Korea's industrial output increased 13.7% in January, which was the fastest pace since August, and better than a 12.4% increase forecast from Bloomberg.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 1.77% to $16.68. Fiancial spurred by overall solid economic data today. Initial jobless claims came in at 368K, below the consensus calling for 400K. Continuing claims of 3.774M was also below the radar. Labor costs dropped more than expected and ISM Service of 59.7 topped the Street looking for 59.0.

  • Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLK) up 1.41% to $26.58. The tech ETF is jumping higher today on positive U.S. economic data, as well as the introduction of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad 2 yesterday, which draws on elements from different segments of the tech industry. Apple shares are up 1.8% in midday trading today, following a close 0.8% better yesterday.


Receders

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 4.70% to $31.00. The CBOE VIX near-term volatility index is down 8.7% today on positive U.S. data, as well as rumors that some of the turmoil in North Africa and the Middle East may be cooling off, easing concerns of oil supply cuts.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.08% to $5.05. EIA data have nat gas supplies dropping by 85 billion cubic feet last week. Analysts had expected a decline between 81 - 85 Bcf. The five-year average decline was 131 Bcf.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 1.47% to $40.78. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez has apparently lead the Arab League in putting together a peace plan for Libya, several sources have said. The plan would call for a commisssion from Latin America, Europe, and Middle East, along with talks between Libya's Qaddafi and oposition forces.
