Gainers

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 5.03% to $38.19. Unrest in Libya, where leader Gadhafi said that he'll fight until "his last drop of blood" is sending oil prices higher. Concerns are focused on whether or not unrest in the north African nation could spread to Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) up 0.58% to $77.47. The ETF hit an intraday 52-week high of $78.06 today as unrest in the Middle East is causing concerns that oil supplies might tighten. Oil prices have nearly broken the $100 per barrel price level, with March contracts touching $99.84 before receding.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 6.17% to $30.82. The CBOE VIX is surging over 14% better today as investors sell off on Libyan news, as consumer confidence hitting a three-year high of 70.4 isn't enough to offset unrest in the Middle East.
