Notable ETF Movers of the Day 02/10: UUP, VXX, EWZ Higher; EWY, UNG, XLK Lower

Gainers

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up $0.63% to $22.45. Making a move north today as jobless claims dropped drop about 36,000 week-over-week to 383K. Continuing claims also decreased to 3.888 million. The lower number suggests that the U.S. may still be on track for economic recovery, as employers begin to ease up and commence hiring of workers.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 0.42% to $28.63. The CBOE VIX volatility index is gaining today, mostly on sour earnings reports out of some big names, which are offsetting what would normall be solid economic data. The CBOE VIX near-term index is about 3% better on the day. Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO), Akamai (Nasdaq: AKAM), PepsiCo. (NYSE: PEP), and Amkor (Nasdaq: AMKR) are all trading lower following their respective quarterly results.

  • iShares MSCI Brazil Index (NYSE: EWZ) up 0.57% to $70.78. Continued buying today as many see the stocks trading at fair value, following weeks of declines on the Bovespa. The Brazilian stock market is currently trading up about 1.12%.


Receders

  • iShares MSCI South Korea Index (NYSE: EWY) down 1.85% to $59.96. Lower today as investors are pulling their money out of the South Korean market on inflation concerns. Analysts have the Bank of Korea raising rates 0.25% to 3% at their meeting tomorrow, in an effort to curb further inflation in the region.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.67% to $5.44. Nat gas dopping today amid an EIA report that saw a 209 billion cubic feet drop in stores last week, larger than analysts were looking for, as traders are still pricing in milder weather coming in for the Midwest and Eastern U.S. starting in Mid-February.

  • Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLK) down 0.30% to $26.80. Notably lower today as Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) has dropped over 13% today, skewing the ETF a little. Others in the top holdings are mixed today, though the majority is to the downside.
