Notable ETF Movers of the Day 01/25: EWJ, UUP VXX Higher; UNG, GLD, MOO Lower
Gainers
Receders
- iShares MSCI Japan Index (NYSE: EWJ) up 0.36% to $11.06. Stocks in Japan rose as the Bank of Japan kept its key rate unchanged at between zero and 0.1%, increasing its growth estimate for FY11 from 2.1% to 3.3%.
- PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.31% to $22.51. The dollar is mixed today, but still in the green as consumer confidence of 60.6 isn't enough to offset housing data failing to meet expectations. The Case-Shiller 20-city index fell 1.59%, compared to the consensus of 1.5%. FHFA Housing Price index also declined to 0.0% from 0.2% prior.
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 1.77% to $32.14. Moving higher today as investors chew economic data over, and earnings on one of the largest reporting days of Q410 (in terms of volume, not clout) showed weaker results out of several big names: 3M (NYSE: MMM), Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), and DuPont (NYSE: DD), to name a few.
Receders
- United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 3.04% to $6.05. Nat gas futures lower today on a warmer outlook in the western U.S. from several forecasters, though still chilly on the East Coast. February 11 contracts are off $0.127/mmBtu to $4.453/mmBtu.
- SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) down 0.74% to $129.39. February 11 contracts are down $19.6/ounce to $1324.9/ounce.
Seeing weakness today on a stronger U.S. dollar, though prices are nearing lows not seen since October 2010. Analysts are looking at $1320/ounce as an activity point, and potential support level for the metal, but many are still unsure of when the recent sell off will end as buyers trade in their gold for currencies and equities.
- Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO) down 1.46% to $53.85. Led by Mosaic Co. (NYSE: MOS) today, as the company filed with the U.S. SEC that some directors will sell holdings in the company ahead of the proposed $24 billion sale by Cargill. Sales by the named executives cannot exceed 15% of the dollar value of their holding. MOS shares are down 3% today.
