Notable ETF Movers of the Day 01/21: SMH, KRE, FXE, XLI Higher; EWY, GLD Lower

January 21, 2011 11:52 AM EST
Gainers

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 0.24% to $33.95. Led by Micron (NYSE: MU) today, following a positive mention by David Tepper on CNBC this morning. Tepper said that he likes semiconductors and mentioned Micron specifically. MU shares are up 2.1% today.

  • SPDR KBW Regional Banking (NYSE: KRE) up 0.3% to $26.73. Amid sour results from Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) today, regionals State Street (NYSE: STT) and BB&T (NYSE: BTT) produced good enough results to keep the sector afloat. XLF shares closed 2.3% lower yesterday following a 10-day high of $16.76 on January 14.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) up 0.74% to $135.20. Euro is making gains today as German confidence rose to a record in January, lifting sentiment for the country and region. Concerns still lie in debt concerns for several European countries.

  • Industrial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLI) up 0.67% to $35.86. Surprisingly only up about 0.7% today, despite General Electric (NYSE: GE) seeing investor/trader/analyst love following a amiable earnings report today.

Receders

  • iShares MSCI South Korea Index (NYSE: EWY) down 1.51% to $61.36. South Korean shares fell as worries that China will increase rates to curb inflation linger, and Morgan Stanley put out a research note, lowering their rating on the Asian nation from Overweight to Equal Weight.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) down 0.27% to $130.85. No economic data today, so investors are focused on a solid day of earnings, whetting their appetite for a little more risk. Complacency in Europe today is also offsetting some fears.
