Notable ETF Movers of the Day 01/19: VXX, UNG, GLD Higher; XLF, MOO, XHB Lower

Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 6.22% to $32.47. The CBOE VIX near-term volatility index is up 4.7% today, as shaky results in the financial sector are sending investors into safer havens. Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) Q410 profit
    fell 53%
    year-over-year, and Wells Fargo and US Bancorp failed to spur buying. Housing starts came in under estimates at 529K, while building permits trumped views at 635K.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 3.08% to $6.20. Futures climbing higher as colder temps are expected to spread across the eastern U.S. over the next two weeks. Despite the outlook, oversupply of nat gas is keeping prices in check. Estimates ahead of EIA data have 200 billion cubic feet drawn last week.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 0.19% to $133.69. The dollar-denominated gold contract is higher today, as the People's Bank of China has fixed the yuan at a record high versus the U.S. dollar. The dollar is seeing weakness today as housing starts came in under the radar and some expect jobless numbers to come in above the consensus tomorrow.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 2.02% to $16.32. Financials are lower today as investors are searching for positives in Q410 reports. Goldman is 2.8% lower today, US Bancorp (NYSE: USB) is 3% lower, and Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) is faring the best of the three, down just 1.8% today.

  • Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO) down 2.97% to $55.24. Led by Mosaic (NYSE: MOS) today, as Cargill looks to distribute their 64% stake in Mosaic to their shareholders and debt holders. The distribution of 286 million shares will not affect Mosaic's outstanding shares.

  • SPDR S&P Homebuilders (NYSE: XHB) down 2.3% to $17.90. Lower today as housing starts of 529K came in lower than estimates of 550K, and below 553K reported in November. Notably, Pier 1 Imports (NYSE: PIR) and Aaron's, Inc. (NYSE: AAN) are both trading in the green today, though on no specific news.
