Gainers
Receders
- iShares MSCI Taiwan Index (NYSE: EWT) up 2.55% to $15.49. Taiwan stocks finished higher as investors are placing bets on closer ties with China. Electronics stocks performed well again, following solid earnings, and tourism and department stores also led the TAIEX index.
- United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 1.02% to $38.56. Continuing higher today as the Trans-Alaska Pipeline continues to be shut, putting pressure on supplies. The pipeline supplies 15% of U.S. output.
- Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) up 1.60% to $69.10. Led by Anadarko (NYSE: APC) today, which is up 4% as Canaccord Genuity imitated coverage on the stock with a Hold. Otherwise, energy stocks may be seeing positive movement from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline shutdown, potentially increasing prices as supplies taper a little.
Receders
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 2.75% to $35.01. As markets are overall positive today, the CBOE VIX near-term index is lower.
- SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) down 0.93% to $46.92. Led by AnnTaylor (NYSE: ANN), which is continuing lower from yesterday, and down nearly 5% today.
Additionally, data from the ICSC-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Index showed a 3.2% decline last week.
- CurrencyShares Japanese Yen Trust (NYSE: FXY) down 0.75% to $118.58. The yen is weaker against most currencies, as Japan's plan to buy Euro zone bonds is boosting the euro versus the yen, amid concerns for further bailout in the region.
