Notable ETF Movers of the Day 12/21: FXI, XLF, USO Higher; VXX, UNG, UUP Lower

Gainers

  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) up 1.84% to $43.16. Closed higher led by properties as the China Index Academy released data showing that urban housing land supply increase 43% year-over-year in the first eleven months. Only 65% of 185,000 hectacres of land designated for all types of development was actually used.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 1.22% to $15.73. Led by J.P. Morgan (NYSE: JPM) today as the bank is atop preliminary results from Dealogic showing that they produced $5.2 billion in investment banking revs for the year, beating out peers BofA (NYSE: BAC) at $4.6 billion, Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) with $4B, and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) with $3.8 billion. JPM shares are up 2.2% on the day. Overall investment banking revs of $66 billion were up 8% from 2009.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 2.45% to $25.90. Stronger today as crude is seeing gains on a weaker dollar, though China is forecast to slow imports next year. China is expected to increase the price of gasoline by $47 per metric ton tomorrow, with a slightly lower increase expected for diesel. WTI crude on the Comex is up 0.4% to $89.71/barrel today.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 1.39% to $36.95. Lots of M&A happening today, with the biggest being TD Bank (NYSE: TD) in a $6.3 billion deal to acquire privately-held Chrysle Financial. Click here for a summary of the top M&A deals today.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.38% to $5.72. Simple reaction to milder a forecast for the Estern U.S. in early January. Some peg temps in NYC at 33 degrees Fahernheit on January 1, 2011, about six-degrees above normal.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.02% to $23.24. Lower today as China's Vice Premier Wang Qishan made comments today that Beijing has played its part in efforts to stem the financial uncertainty in Europe, and hopes that a turning point was near. The EUR/USD is 0.0014 higher today, to €1.3135.
