Notable ETF Movers of the Day 12/09: XLF, UUP, GLD Higher; UNG, VXX, USO Lower

Gainers

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 0.71% to $15.53. Financials are seeing some strength stemming from American International Group (NYSE: AIG), which announced a recapitalization plan with the U.S. treasury late yesterday. Shares were halted, and then resumed trading today. They are currently 6.5% higher.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.39% to $23.19. Though the dollar is a little weaker against other major currencies, its showing strength versus the euro as Fitch cut Ireland's credit rating from A+ to BBB+, with a stable outlook.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 0.25% to $135.13. Though a little correction has occurred over the last week, investors are still sticking with precious metals against volatile currencies.


Receders

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE:
    UNG) down 0.16% to $6.29. EIA data showed a drop in nat gas stores by 89 billion cubic feet (bcf) to 3.725 bcf. Analysts were looking for a drop of 84 bcf, according to a Dow Jones survey.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 0.44% to $38.88. Initial jobless claims came in at 421K, below the consensus looking for 429K, and continuing claims were also better at 4086K, compared to the consensus of 4240K.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 0.29% to $37.85. Though future should be on the rise with positive jobless news, the stronger U.S. dollar is keeping them in check. January 11 contracts have been flirting with the $90 price level this morning, but are down fractionally currently.
