Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE:
VXX) up 3.69% to $47.80. The CBOE VIX near-term volatility index is about 4.7% higher today as European debt, Wikileaks, and an unlikely extension to unemployment benefits are outweighing an improved Chicago PMI index and boosted consumer confidence.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 1.21% to $135.13. Futures moving higher today as investors are looking to hedge against uncertainty in the markets stemming from European debt concerns, which may spread further than most believe.

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 0.32% to $47.11. Mixed overall today, but seeing more upside as Netflix
(Nasdaq: NFLX) continues its run higher on positive overall sentiment.
Additionally, Cyber Monday sales increased 19% from last year, with the average order price boosted 8.3%, according to Coremetrics.

Receders

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.21% to $5.73. Seeing some downside today as a brief warm front sweeping through the midwest will curb natural gas demand. January 11 contracts are down 1.6% today to $4.141/mmBtu.

  • Guggenheim Solar (NYSE: TAN) down 2.82% to $6.91. Being led by Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL) today, which is trading 4.9% lower today amid reporting relatively strong Q3 results this morning. TSL posted an EPS of $1.08 and revs of $508.3 million, compared to the consensus EPS of $0.87 on revs of $420.46 million. TSL also increased their FY10 shipment outlook.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) down 1.49% to $30.97. Although the year-end edition of the SEMI Capital Equipment Forecast predicts that FY10 semiconductor equipment sales are expected to reach record levels, at $37.54 billion, investors and traders are expecting more sluggish sales as Europe comes to grips with debt issues and China is making efforts to curb inflation. The $37.54 billion number is a 136% improvement from $15.92 billion reported in FY09.
