Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE:
VXX) up 5.4% to $45.26. Pressure across the markets as North and South Korea exchanged fire yesterday, as well as continued European debt worries.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 0.71% to $134.43. Investors turning to gold as a safe haven against currencies upon the heightened tensions between South and North Korea.

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 0.13% to $46.49. Being bolstered by Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), who has seen some strength lately following new offerings and pricing in the U.S. market.
Though shares of NFLX are only up 0.2% this morning, the sheer volume is enough to support the ETF.

Receders

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) down 1.43% to $118.47 and PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq:
QQQQ)down 1.64% to $52.04. News includes the Korean tensions, an increase in failed banks, and European debt concerns as Spain now looks like they will become the next target for aid.

  • SPDR S&P Homebuilders (NYSE: XHB) down 1.15% to $15.42. Hanging in there somewhat as existing home sales fell 2.2% sequentially, and 26% from October 2009.
Despite the drop, the 4.43 million in sales came in better than the 4.42 million consensus.

  • iShares MSCI South Korea Index (NYSE: EWY) down 5.39% to $53.52. Probably one of the worst performing ETFs today following a firing of artillery by North Korea on South Korea, which killed six South Korean marines. South Korea returned the favor, and began scrambling fighter jets. North Korea says they were provoked by South Korea performing military exercises. Yeonpyeong Island, where the incident took place, was also the site of another conflict as recent as January, when South Korea reported that the North had fired shells that fell in waters north of the Northern Limit Line.
