Gainers

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 0.48% to $46.22. The ETF being led today by Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), which is seeing some upside today following the announcement that their traditional plan allowing for streaming and DVD rentals, has seen a price increase from $7.99 to $9.99 per month, and the introduction of a streaming-only plan in the U.S. for $7.99 per month. Shares of NFLX are up 7.2% today.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 0.65% to $31.02. Though mixed today, a push from Broadcom (Nasdaq: BRCM) following its announcement of acquiring Gigle Networks for $75 million, is keeping the ETF in the green today.
BRCM shares are up 1.8% today, enough to offset the negative traders in the ETF.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 0.18% to $44.53. Rather flat on a ho-hum market day today, but still showing some upside as investors are still deciding the fate of Euro debt amid a bailout for Ireland by the EUand IMF, the second such move in six months for the union.

Receders

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE:
XLF) down 1.48% to $14.64. As Goldman Sachs
(NYSE: GS) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) are lower today following the announcement that they two are coming under insider trading scrutiny from the U.S. government. Additionally, a Barclays Capital study found that the top 35 largest U.S. banks will be between $100 and $135 billion shy of equity capital requirements upon the imposition of Basel III regulations.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 1.25% to $34.78. Crude is lower today following the bailout of Ireland, which is doubly sending the U.S. dollar higher thereby making crude more costly, and providing uncertainty as to economic recovery in Europe. Portugal and Spain are two more targets that may be drawing attention of investors as debt concerns persist.

  • iShares MSCI Hong Kong Index (NYSE: EWH) down 1.59% to $18.92. Slipping today as inflation in Hong Kong, at 2.6% for October, came in above expectations for 2.4%.
