Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 3.03% to $45.95. The CBOE VIX is trading higher today, thanks in part to Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO) first quarter earnings fumble. No economic data will offset the news from the tech bellwether today, making it a potentially dreary day in the markets as investors evaluate their positions.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.69% to $22.64. Higher today versus a basket of currencies as sentiment is behind the Fed possibly scaling-back the size of quantitative easing that they will infuse into the system.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) up 0.27% to $63.35. Despite the glum market conditions today, analysts are going all sweet on Halliburton Company
(NYSE: HAL) following their analyst conference. Positive sentiment came from Canaccord Genuity, FBR Capital, Jefferies, Credit Suisse, and more. Shares are up 1.15% in afternoon trading.

Receders

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) down 0.77% to $121.16 and PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq: QQQQ) down 1.24% to $53.05. Markets seeing weakness today following Cisco's Q111 earnings report. With iffy guidance being issued, many are wondering how solid the U.S., and global, economic recovery has been.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 1.17% to $15.16. Being led today by MetLife (NYSE:
MET), who announced that they would be discontinuing sales of Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI). Applications will be accepted through December 30, 2010, and the existing 600,000 customers subscribing to LTCI will continued to be serviced, as long as they pay their premiums. Shares of MET are down 2.4% today.

  • Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLK) down 1.87% to $24.60. The tech ETF is lower today, as Cisco shares are trading, remarkably, 15.7% lower today, following their first quarter earnings report.
