Receders
- SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) up 1.28%% to $118.22. The indexes are gaining today, ahead of economic data out from the Fed, as investors have been loving earnings season so far, and the impact of a rate hike in China appears to be less than expected. The Nasdaq, S&P, and DJIA are all above 1.2% higher in midday trading today.
- iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate (NYSE: IYR) up 2.25% to $56.28. After elevated volatility yesterday following questions of what an interest rate hike in China would mean for developers, the sector is rebounding today ahead of the Fed's Beige Book as concerns are easing on the severity of the potential fallout as China seels to slow-down the globe's most rapidly expanding economy. Notably, mortgage applications for the week ended were down 10.5%.
- United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 2.00% to $35.32. Making gains on the weaker U.S. dollar today as well as the EIA reporting an increase of 1.2 million barrels, compared to expectations for a 2.1 million barrel increase.
Receders
- SPDR KBW Bank (NYSE: KBE) down 1.27% to $22.60. Though holdings in the ETF are a little mixed, its being pushed lower by Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) and Marshall & Ilsley Corp. (NYSE: MI). BAC is feeling a pinch from analyst downgrades today, as well as an SEC registration disclosing that they filed to sell up to 50.3 million shares of common stock. M & I is down about 7.8% on reporting a Q3 loss of $0.32 per share, wider than the analyst expectation for a $0.25 per share loss.
- PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 1.37% to $22.39. Well, the dollar is back down again. Following an exciting march upward yesterday, the U.S. dollar is collapsing as hints of the Fed continuing easing are once again resurfacing. The U.S. dollar is weaker against 14 of 16 counterparts today. Investors and traders are looking for signals from the Fed's beige book later.
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 4.01% to $13.90. Last checks have the CBOE VIX near-term index down 3.3% today, as airlines lead confidence back into the market on several beats across the sector. Additionally, the interest rate hike by China yesterday seems not to be affecting markets to severely, as the Shanghai Composite Index increased 0.2% in overnight trading, and U.S. markets a clearly shaking off any jitters that they may have had yesterday.
