Notable ETF Movers of the Day 10/19: UNG, UUP, XLF Higher; GLD, XRT, XLE Lower (BAC, GS, OXY, SVU)

Gainers

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 0.90% to $5.62. Somehow up today as the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) revised their nat gas prices projection through 2011. Prices are expected to continue below $4 mmBtu for the balance of October, and then increase to $4.68/mmBtu in January. Prices for FY11 are expected to be $4.58/mmBtu, about 4% below expectations given in September. The NOAA cites a 3% increase in temps from October through March for the lowered expectations.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 1.16% to $22.58. The U.S. dollar is seeing a bump-up today as China increased their deposit and lending rates, which many fear is a move by the fastest growing economy to curb its rapid expansion. Additionally, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner stated that the Fed would preserve confidence in a "strong dollar."

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 0.51% to $14.74. Being bolstered today by Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS), following the firms third quarter earnings report today. Goldman reported an EPS of $2.98 per share and revs of $8.90 billion, compared to the consensus EPS of $2.28 on revs of $7.92 billion. Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) is also helping out the ETF, by reporting an EPS of $0.27 on revs of $27 billion. The Street was looking for an EPS of $0.16 and revs of $27.15 billion. BAC said that they benefitted from a sharp drop in loan losses.


Receders

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) down 2.26% to $131.24. Gold seeing the exact opposite benefit that the dollar is seeing from a hike in rates by the Chinese. Investors flocked from gold to the perceived safety of the U.S. dollar. Investors may also be cashing in a little gold to make up for some losses in equities today.

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) down 1.45% to $43.48. The ETF is lower today as grocery store giant SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU) missed their third quarter earnings, and consequently lowered their FY11 outlook.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) down 1.20% to $58.66. Seeing some negative pressure from Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY), which is 4.6% lower following their third quarter earnings report today. OXY beat on the top and bottom lines today, but investors may be a little nervous of the company's ability to keep up production, which reached a per-day record in the quarter.
