Gainers

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 0.44% to $43.72. The Commerce Department today said that retail sales in September increased 0.6%, compared to the consensus outlook for a 04% increase. The gain followed a 0.7% increase in August.

  • Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLK) up 1.01% to $23.93. Though a little mixed today, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is pushing the ETF higher following its third quarter earnings report. Shares of Google are 10.6% higher today. GOOG reported a Q3 EPS of $7.64 on revs of $5.5 billion, compared to the consensus EPS of $6.68 and $5.25 billion in revs.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.41% to $22.30. The U.S. dollar is showing a little resilience today as some speculate that the euros recent run versus the currency may have been too far too fast. A speech from Fed Chair Ben Bernanke all but confirmed further quantitative easing from the Fed, which is likely to produce a weaker U.S. dollar.

Receders
  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 1.06% to $14.44. Continuing their slide today, banking stocks are feeling the impact of home foreclosure investigations in all 50 states for the falsification of documents during proceedings. Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) seems to be leading the ETF lower, down 3.9%.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.63% to $5.75. The relatively volatile ETF is lower again today, as hurricane season winds down in the Gulf, and milder temps are expected in the Midwest and Northeast at least through the weekend.

  • Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy (NYSE: TAN) down 1.20% to $9.05. After making an impressive run over the last several days, traders and investors may be taking a little profit from the ETF. The ETF ran up about 10% since October 5, 2010, though the run started just before September.
