Notable ETF Movers of the Day 10/12: XLF, TAN Higher; UNG, XLE, VXX Lower

Gainers

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 0.14% to $14.70. Being led today by American Express (NYSE: AXP), who is trading about 2% higher amid a SunTrust upgrade from Hold to Buy. Stocks also awaiting the FOMC Minutes report later on this afternoon.

  • Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy (NYSE: TAN) up 0.57% to $8.79. The ETF's holdings are a little mixed today, but being pushed higher by SunPower (Nasdaq: SPWRA) who announced that they have begun construction on a 3.5-MW solar power system on Macy's online fulfillment center. Shares of SPWRA are up 3.2% today. Additionally, Ascent Solar (Nasdaq: ASTI) announced that their lightweight, flexible, high power thin-film CIGS modules will be distributed by Votum in the Czech Republic. Shares of ASTI are trading 18.4% higher.


Receders

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.13% to $5.68. Trading lower today as forecasts are calling for more temperate weather over the next several weeks. Typically, nat gas prices hit seasonal lows in August and September, in anticipation of the weather shift. However, milder temps and higher inventories have pushed the ETF to a new all-time low today.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) down 0.79% to $58.06. Shares pulling back ahead of the FOMC minutes later, and following a 16% runup in September through yesterday.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 1.06% to $14.95. Shares of the CBOE VIX are trading about flat today as investors and traders are a little complacent ahead of the FOMC minutes today.
