Gainers

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 0.42% to $14.43. Financials are making a nice move today, helped in part by AIG (NYSE: AIG) as they announced that they have sold off their Japanese life units for $4.8 billion. AIG also introduced a plan to repay the U.S. government the full $20 billion it received during the 2008 meltdown.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 0.97% to $34.28. Looking good today as economic data are pointing to a recovering economy in the coming months. U.S. GDP was revised higher to 1.7%, jobless claims came in 4,000 below estimates, and the Chicago PMI came in at 60.4, beating the consensus of 56.0.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 2.24% to $17.32. The CBOE VIX is higher today as the initial knee-jerk reaction to economic data may be ebbing as investors get a chance to delve deeper into the numbers.

Receders

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) down 0.34% to $127.48. Gold is pulling back a little after several record-setting sessions, as investors' appetite for risk is increasing today on strong jobs numbers and a revised GDP upward. December 2010 contracts are down marginally today, to $1306.6/ounce on the COMEX.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 3.79% to $6.09. Lower today as EIA numbers show a 79 billion cubic foot increase in stores to 3.414 trillion cubic feet. Consensus was for a 66 bcf increase.

  • iShares MSCI Japan Index (NYSE: EWJ) down 1.30% to $9.88. Japanese stocks closed lower on Thursday, on European economic worries, and a cut in profit forecast from Nintendo (OTCBB: NTDOY).
