Gainers

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 0.78% to $33.45. The EIA announced that crude inventories fell 475,000 barrels last week.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 0.66% to $16.71. No real economic news is driving the markets today, but unrest is still present over speculation on further austerity measures in European countries. The CBOE VIX near-term index is up 2.35% today.

  • Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy (NYSE: TAN) up 2.91% to $8.49. The solar sector is on fire today, with names like Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE), Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL), and SunPower (Nasdaq: SPWRA) all in the green. TSL and YGE are well above the 6% level.

Receders

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 0.21% to $14.45. Citigroup (NYSE: C) is the lone financial stock in the green today, as the U.S. government is offering up their trust preferred securities (TRUPS) received pursuant to the Asset Guarantee Program (AGP). Otherwise, the financials are lower all around on austerity measures in Europe.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.57% to $6.24. Although there is still activity in the Gulf ahead of the end to hurricane season, threats of a disruption in production are subdued as tropical storm Nicole is making a bee-line for Florida.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.26% to $22.82. The dollar is seeing pressure lately as weak economic data is fueling speculation that the Fed will increase quantitative easing. Should that happen, the dollar would drop as other currencies become more attractive. Should U.S. economic data come in strong moving forward, the dollar might still get kicked to the sideline as investors move into equities to capture some risk premium.
