Notable ETF Movers of the Day 09/23: UNG, EWZ, SMH Higher; FXE, XLF, IYR Lower

Gainers

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 1.14% to $6.63. Higher today after EIA showed an increase of 73 billion cubic feet in stores for the week ended September 17, 2010. Analysts were looking for an increase of 77 to 81 billion cubic feet.

  • iShares MSCI Brazil Index (NYSE: EWZ) up 1.96% to $74.84. Brazil stocks closed higher yesterday as Brazilian consumer confidence and outstanding loan data sparked investment in the market. Consumer confidence of 121.7 in September topped 120.9 in August and the historical average of 107 points.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 1.90% to $26.79. Getting a boost from Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), which reported strong second quarter earnings, and Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN), who may be seeing some upside as S&P raises CCR from A to A+, outlook stable.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) down 0.30% to $133.01. Economic data from Europe today is holding the euro down versus other currencies. Ireland posted a 1.2% drop in Q2 GDP, and the Markit PMI fell from 56.2 to 53.8 in August. Economists were looking for a decline to just 55.9.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 0.41% to $14.44. A slight jump in jobless claims today, offset by an increase in leading indicators, is producing mixed results in terms of economic recovery for the U.S. today.

  • iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate (NYSE: IYR) down 0.64% to $52.97. Although data existing home sales data showed a 7.4% increase in August from July 2010, the numbers are 19.2% lower than August 2009. Inventory is also up 2.7% from August 2009.
