Notable ETF Movers of the Day 09/22: VXX, GLD, FXE Higher; XLK, XLF, USO Lower

Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 1.97% to $17.12. The CBOE VIX volatility index is higher today as investors and traders are still digesting Fed comments made yesterday afternoon. The FOMC left their rate unchanged at 0.25%, hinting at some potential quantitative easing.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 0.07% to $126.10. Gold continue to break to record highs following the FOMC statement yesterday.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) up 1.15% to $133.35. The euro is showing strength against the U.S. dollar again today on Fed news. The Fed buying debt would push down interest rates, making investments in U.S. dollars less attractive.


Receders

  • Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLK) down 0.83% to $22.63. Although Adobe Systems (Nasdaq: ADBE) isn't in the top ten holdings of this one, the fact that their down near-20% is weighing across the tech sector, as the company failed to dazzle during their third quarter earnings report, with a weak outlook.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 1.12% to $14.59. Trading lower, led by MetLife, Inc. (NYSE: MET), which is down 3.8% today as AIG (NYSE: AIG) may be in talks to sell two their Japanese businesses to rival Prudential (NYSE: PRU) for $4 to $5 billion. MET is to close on a $15.5 billion acquisition of AIG's Alico by years-end.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 0.52% to $32.48. EIA data today showed a 970K increase in crude stock piles for the week ended September 18, 2010.
