Gainers

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 2.68% to $6.51. Nat gas futures are trading higher, up about $0.112/mmBtu to $3.880/mmBtu on the COMEX, despite outlooks for cooler weather across the U.S. and data released earlier in the week showing an increase of stockpiles at the higher-end of analyst estimates.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 2.20% to $33.61. Seeing continued movement today after EIA reported a surprising drop in inventory, to the tune of 1.85 million barrels, earlier in the week. No economic data would be influencing the move today.

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 1.35% to $38.91. Casey’s General Stores (Nasdaq: CASY) is the lone retailer trading lower in the ETF today, as the company confirmed receiving a $40 per share bid from 7-Eleven. Meanwhile, the other suitor, Alimentation Couche-Tard, put out a press release today noting that they expanded their footprint in Indiana with the acquisition of 12 stores from Crystal Flash Petroleum, LLC.

Receders

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 1.64% to $18.63. The CBOE VIX near-term ETF is having a rough September, ending higher only one day so far this month. Investors may be staging a rally on positive consumer sentiment stemming from recent jobs numbers and Fed language.

  • CurrencyShares Japanese Yen Trust (NYSE: FXY) down 0.53% to $117.48. The yen is showing some weakness on an upward revision to Japan’s GDP and the Japanese government unveiling a Y915 billion stimulus package.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) down 1.85% to $24.93. Semis being led today by National Semiconductor (NYSE: NSM), as the company reported strong first quarter results, but gave muted guidance. NSM is trading about 7% lower today.
