Notable ETF Movers of the Day 08/26: USO, FXE, MOO Higher; UNG, VXX, SMH Lower

The ETF movers is a look at all the more notable movements of unlevered ETFs available to trade on the U.S. exchanges.

Gainers

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 1.02% to $32.70. Oil is rising on economic data that showed a drop in jobless claims from the prior mark. Initial claims of 476K came in below the consensus of 485K, and under 504K reported for the last period. More workers = more commuters = more monney for travel and recreation = an increased demand for energy.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) up 0.36% to $126.52. Stronger today as the U.S. dollar falls on speculation that the U.S. Fed will take further action to support the U.S. economy. EUR/USD is currently at 1.2693. The speculation comes on a week of ho-hum economic data, and eyes will be on Fed Chief Ben Bernanke's speech from Jackson Hole today.

  • Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO) up 0.53% to $43.23. May also be seeing some upside from an improved jobless number this week. Interest in the sector has also been piqued by a merger dance between BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP) and Potash Corp. (NYSE: POT) over the last several days.


Receders

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.30% to $6.48. Nat gas prices lower today as the EIA reported a 40 billion cubic foot increase in stores, compared to the analyst consensus of a 37 to 41 Bcf increase.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 0.76% to $22.50. Trading lower today as investor inch their way back into the markets as economic data today showed jobless claims coming in under consensus numbers, and mortgage delinquencies down in Q210 versus Q110. The CBOE VIX near-term index is just about break even.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) down 0.71% to $25.28. Shares in the sector mixed overall today as durable orders data might still be digesting. Additionally, Intel Corporation (NYSE: INTC) is lower as rumors are floating that they may pick up Infineon's (OTCBB: IFNNY) wireless unit. IFNNY stock is trading 5.7% higher on the news, whereas INTC stock is 0.73% lower today.
