Notable ETF Movers of the Day 08/12: GLD, UUP, MOO Higher; SMH, USO, FXI Lower (CSCO, GDX, XLK)

Gainers

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 1.20% to $118.75. Shares climbing to above the $1214/ounce mark today as investors are moving in amid an unexpected increase in jobless claims for the week ended August 7. Claims rose by 2K to 484K, compared to the analyst estimate for a 14K drop in claims. Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX) is also up 2.32% to $50.22 today.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.17% to $23.97. Notably above the 200-day SMA as investors continued heading toward the dollar as a safe haven against markets. UUP is on a two day winning streak, after a sharp falloff on Tuesday following Fed comments.

  • Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO) up 1.25% to $42.03. Agri-stocks are being supported today by K+S, a German salt miner, which upped its forecast for potash sales volume for the balance of 2010. K+S sees stronger recovery in "Europe and North America and higher expected consumption in Latin America." The company reported an EPS of €0.51, which just about doubled the €0.27 reported for Q209.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) down 1.62% to $26.07. Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) reported strong earnings yesterday, but not strong enough. Additionally, CEO John Chambers projected an uncertain forecast going through FY10. Additionally, BMO Capital downgraded the Semi sector from Market Perform to Underperform. Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLK) is also 1.20% lower to $21.41 today.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 1.04% to $34.37. Oil is a prime victim of a slowing economic recovery. Traders may be waiting until tomorrow's CPI report to see whether or not prices will continue appreciating at a normal pace. The Street is looking for a 0.2% increase, compared to the 0.1% loss for June.

  • iShares FTSE/Xinhua China 25 Index (NYSE: FXI) down 0.27% to $40.04. Chinese shares fell on worries that the U.S. economic recovery, as well as their own, may be stalling. Data showed that imports into China increased by 27.1%, compared to the consensus of 30.2%, and 34.1% reported for the prior month.
