Toyota Motor (NYSE: TM) announced today that they have solved the problem of sticking accelerator pedals in several of their automobile line-ups. The company said that they are shipping the parts to the dealers already, and that dealers would stay open extended hours to fix the problem.
The final fix involves a precision-cut steel reinforcement bar that is installed into the accelerator pedal assembly. The bar is expected to reduce tension and friction, both are elements that contributed to the pedals working improperly.
As previously stated, the recall will affect Toyota's:
Ford has said that they have experienced no problems as of yet on their Transit Classic or any other vehicles utilizing the CTS pedals.
Finally, for the pedal recalls, French manufacturer PSA Peugeot Citroen is recalling 97,000 total cars with pedal concerns. The autos are the Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 subcompact models. They say that the recall will affect less than 10% of the two models now used in Europe. Neither of the models are available in the States.
Honda (NYSE: HMC) also recalled autos recently, though not for faulty pedals. Honda's popular Fit model has been recalled due to a potential fire hazard related to a master switch that would allow water to enter the power window switch, and potentially start a fire.
So far, only 2007 and 2008 Honda Fit's have had the recall issued to them, amounting to a total of 646,000 globally and 140,000 in the U.S.
