Clear Street analyst Bill Maughan raised the price target on WAVE Life Sciences (NASDAQ: WVE) to $50.00 (from $47.00) while maintaining a Buy rating.
The analyst comments "Shares of WVE are trading roughly in line with the broader market (+1%, XBI +2%) after announcing this morning that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK, NYSE, NC) has returned the rights to WVE-006 for alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). We view the update as an overall positive, though we believe the muted stock reaction is due to the outsized importance of ‘007 in the valuation overshadowing the AATD program. Despite GSK’s decision, we continue to believe in the strength of the program. GSK’s focus appears squarely on larger commercial efforts and more prevalent diseases. And neither GSK nor Wave has seen updated data from the program that would have impacted this decision. Wave continues to see cash runway to 3Q28, though regulatory clarity on requirements for a pivotal and confirmatory study, as well as updated plans for a commercial build out could impact that. Wave is now committed to driving the opportunity forward wholly-owned, which we agree carries the largest potential for value creation. And the marketing effort for a rare disease is likely well within the capabilities of Wave without a larger partner. Finally, the WVE-007 program to treat obesity remains the thesis driver in our view (see our note on December’s ‘007 data here), and we believe that the market is currently underappreciating the magnitude and likelihood of success from that program, which is the reason that WVE is one of our two Top Picks for 2026. Upon reflecting Wave’s full ownership of the AATD program, we are increasing our price target to $50 (prev, $47) and reiterate BUY."
