BofA Securities analyst Geoff Meacham upgraded Vir Biotechnology (NASDAQ: VIR) from Neutral to Buy with a price target of $14.00 (from $12.00).
The analyst comments "We are upgrading Vir to Buy from Neutral and raising our PO to $14 from $12 as we think the market is underestimating the potential for its asset for treatment of severe liver disease caused by hepatitis delta virus (HDV, >$1B unadjusted peak sales). Further, there seems to be minimal value attributed to T-cell engager (TCE) oncology programs despite initial proof-of-concept data. Having traded -40% YTD on what we view as a lack of catalyst flow and concerns on cash burn, we see two key points driving upside next 12 months: 1) spend for the pivotal ECLIPSE phase 3 trials is warranted in our view given derisking data last year ahead of share-moving pivotal trial readouts in late 2026e and 2) masked TCEs limiting off-target activity may be differentiated from competitors on dosing frequency and efficacy in large cancer types (breast, prostate, colorectal)."
