Stifel analyst Benjamin Nolan raised the price target on Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) to $265.00 (from $247.00) while maintaining a Hold rating.
He said, "NSC's new leadership and sharpened operational focus are narrowing the once-wide performance gap with its peers, allowing the company to meet its guidance set out in early 2024. Enhanced productivity measures have driven down operating costs and significantly improved service quality, which is becoming increasingly necessary in today's softer freight market. We expect the positive momentum from the second half of 2024 to extend into 2025, fueling further margin expansion and strengthening the company's competitive standing. While macroeconomic conditions remain softer and coal headwinds persist, these strategic initiatives have fortified NSC's ability to capture volume growth in a recovering freight environment. However, with shares trading at a premium relative to its East Coast competitor, we believe the current valuation already reflects much of the anticipated upside, despite the company's ongoing improvements."
