Sallie Mae (NYSE: SLM) +$5.23; According to reports from The New York Times, Sallie Mae is in takeover talks with private equity firms in deal that could be worth more than $20 billion.
Merck (NYSE: MRK) +$4.09; Anticipates its first-quarter earnings per share will be $0.84 (reported EPS will be $0.78), citing strong revenue performance across the Company's range of products. The consensus is $0.63. The Company also raised its anticipated 2007 full-year EPS range to $2.75 to $2.85. The consensus is $2.65. The company also said an FDA panel votes 20 to 1 against Merck's Arcoxia pain reliever.
The Lubrizol Corporation (NYSE: LZ) +4.08; Expects to report strong earnings performance for the first quarter of 2007 of approximately $1.00 per diluted share, including a restructuring credit of approximately $.02 per diluted share. (Consensus is $0.78)
FCStone Group (Nasdaq: FCSX) +$3.48; Reports Q2 EPS of $0.48 compared to $0.27 for the same period last year. Revenues, net of cost of commodities sold, a non-GAAP financial measure, were $60.1 million in the three months ended February 28, 2007, compared to $42.3 million in the prior year quarter, an increase of 42%.
Cutter & Buck (Nasdaq: CBUK) +$2.54; Announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by New Wave Group AB $14.38 per share, or $156.5 million.

Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) -$3.71; Company expects to report that total net orders in the second quarter of fiscal year 2007, including orders generated in the quarter by the newly acquired ACCEL Instruments business, grew by 12 percent over the year-ago quarter to about $480 million with 2 percent growth in Oncology Systems and strong growth in all other businesses.
Keithley Instruments (NYSE: KEI) -$3.06; Announced that sales levels for the second quarter of fiscal 2007, which ended March 31, 2007, fell short of the guidance range that was previously provided. Sees Q3 sales of $33 million vs. $40.25 million consensus. Sees Q2 earnings per share loss vs. consensus for $0.13 profit.
Semitool (Nasdaq: SMTL) -$2.26; Sees Q2 revenue of $51 to $53 million versus the company's prior revenue forecast of between $55 million and $57 million. The consensus is $56.45 million. Net bookings for the quarter were $37.8 million versus $50.9 million in the second quarter last year. The company also updated its 2007 fiscal year revenue forecast to a range of $210 million to $230 million versus its prior forecast of between $260 million and $310 million. The consensus is $273 million.
Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: VRTX) -$2.16; Says new data supporting the clinical development of telaprevir (VX-950), one of the most advanced investigational oral protease inhibitors for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, will be presented at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in Barcelona this week. In total, nine abstracts related to telaprevir have been accepted for presentation at the EASL conference, including an abstract that describes telaprevir activity against genotypes 2, 3 and 4 in vitro.
