The Dow Gains 9 Points, Nasdaq Falls 2

The Dow gained 8.94 points to close at 12569.14, the Nasdaq lost 2.16 points to close at 2,469.18,
and the S&P 500 added 0.85 points to close at 1,444.61. Stocks ended flat with light volume as most foreign markets were closed for the holiday. However, traders were upbeat on stronger than expected job growth in March and more 'Merger Monday' activity/rumors. Other big news on Wall Street was the steep drop in Oil, closing down $2.77 to $61.51.

Volume was modest with 2.41 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.8 billion trading on the Nasdaq.
Decliners topped Advancers by a margin of 18:14 on the NYSE and 17:13 on the Nasdaq.

In individual stories, Nuvelo (Nasdaq: NUVO) jumped 52.7% on rumors that Bayer (NYSE: BAY) may decide to take NUVO's experimental blood clot dissolver for further trials, which had been temporarily suspended after failing to meet main goals (Reuters). Sourcefire (Nasdaq: FIRE) fell over 29% after the Company announced preliminary financial results for its first fiscal quarter ended March 31, 2007.

Tomorrow, investors will be looking for earnings from Alcoa (NYSE: AA), Bakers Footwear (Nasdaq: BKRS), Electro Scientific (Nasdaq: ESIO) and PacificNet (Nasdaq: PACT).
