BofA Securities analyst Vivek Arya reiterated a Buy rating on NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) while reiterating the Underperform rating for Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) after Top500.org released the 57th edition of its semi-annual Top 500 supercomputers list incorporating features of the most powerful machines installed by governments, national labs and universities, defense, and healthcare as well as other HPC applications. Key takeaways include:
1) compute perf. of Top 500 +26% YoY to 2.8 exaflops
2) NVDA’s accelerator share rose to 96%, up 62bp HoH/276bp YoY
3) AMD gained staggering 560bp of CPU share HoH to 9.8%, and now in 3 of top 10 systems (same as INTC)
4) global supercomputing “arms” race between US, China, Europe, Japan (retained #1 system position) continues to be positive for top compute picks NVDA/AMD.

The analyst stated "We reiterate Buy NVDA (accelerator dominance), AMD (CPU share gains), and Underperform INTC (CPU share loss, foundry distraction)." "NVDA has 96% share of the accelerated systems on the Top 500 list and its overall percent penetration has been on a long-term uptrend. Versus the Nov 2020/June 2020 surveys, NVDA’s share grew 62bps/275bp. Most of the remaining accelerated supercomputing systems rely on an Intel Xeon-Phi co-processor, though AMD did continue to maintain one socket with its AMD Vega GPU accelerator in a Sugon supercomputer based in China."
