Vitamin Shoppe (VSI) Misses Q1 EPS by 22c, Miss on Revenues; Weak FY EPS Guidance

Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI) reported Q1 EPS of $0.35, $0.22 worse than the analyst estimate of $0.57. Revenue for the quarter came in at $316.9 million versus the consensus estimate of $325.9 million.

GUIDANCE:

Vitamin Shoppe sees FY2017 EPS of $1.50-$1.75, versus the consensus of $2.04.

2017 Outlook

Management is providing the following outlook for 2017:

  • Total comparable sales growth rate of negative low to mid single digit
  • Open 15 new stores
  • Transform 10 - 15 stores into new format
  • GAAP fully diluted earnings per share in the range of $1.03 - $1.28. This includes estimated charges of $18 million associated with the implementation of strategic initiatives to improve performance at Nutri-Force. Excluding the impact of these charges, adjusted EPS is estimated at $1.50 -$1.75. [See Table 5 for GAAP reconciliation.]
  • Capital expenditures of approximately $45 million
  • For 2Q17, the Company expects GAAP a fully diluted earnings per share loss of $0.07 to positive earnings per share of $0.03. This includes an estimated charge of $15 million associated with the Nutri-Force restructuring. Excluding this charge, the Company estimates 2Q adjusted EPS of $0.32 to $0.42.
