UN right chief troubled by treatment of pro-Palestinian protesters at U.S. universities Apr 30, 2024 06:26AM

GENEVA (Reuters) - The U.N. human rights chief said on Tuesday he was "troubled" by heavy-handed actions taken by U.S. security forces during attempts to break up pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses.

"I am concerned that some of law enforcement actions across a series of universities appear disproportionate in their impacts," Volker Turk said in a statement sent to journalists, in which he made reference to arrests and sanctions of students.

Gaza ministry says 34,535 Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes since Oct. 7 Apr 30, 2024 06:23AM

CAIRO (Reuters) - More than 34,535 Palestinians have been killed and 77,704 wounded in the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7 last year, the Gaza health ministry said on Tuesday.

Israeli military strikes across Gaza in the past 24 hours killed 47 people and wounded 61, it said.
