Taiwan says may be hard to attend WHO assembly, Blinken offers support May 1, 2024 10:32PM

TAIPEI (Reuters) - It will be hard for Taiwan to attend this year's World Health Organization annual assembly, and it hopes more countries will support its presence, the island's foreign minister said on Thursday after the United States pressed for an invite.

Taiwan is excluded from most international organisations because of objections by China, which considers the democratically governed island its own territory.

Japan's FX intervention signals 160 yen line in the sand, says ex-official May 1, 2024 10:25PM

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese authorities likely intervened in the currency market to signal they see 160 yen to the dollar as their line in the sand, Columbia University academic and former finance ministry executive Takatoshi Ito told Reuters on Thursday.

Solomon Islands picks China-friendly Manele as new prime minister May 1, 2024 09:39PM

(Reuters) -Solomon Islands lawmakers selected a new prime minister on Thursday, choosing foreign minister Jeremiah Manele, who has pledged to continue the Pacific Island nation's foreign policy that drew it closer to China.

Governor General Sir David Vunagi announced outside parliament house that Manele had won 31 votes, to Opposition leader Matthew Wales' 18 votes.

Yen gives up ground vs dollar following surge on suspected intervention May 1, 2024 09:28PM

TOKYO (Reuters) - The yen gave up ground in early trade on Thursday, reversing direction after a sudden surge against the dollar overnight that traders and analysts were quick to attribute to intervention by Japanese authorities.

The dollar was 0.9% higher at 155.98 yen as of 0100 GMT, retracing about half of its late Wednesday surge from around 157.55 to exactly 153 over a period of about 30 minutes.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Solomon Islands lawmakers selected a new prime minister in a secret ballot on Thursday, choosing foreign minister Jeremiah Manele, who has pledged to continue the Pacific Island nation's foreign policy that saw it grow close to China.
