TOKYO (Reuters) - The dollar hovered close to an eight-week low on Friday, ahead of a crucial U.S. jobs report that should provide clues on the timing of Federal Reserve interest rate cuts.
The euro held on to overnight gains after the European Central Bank reduced rates in a well-telegraphed move, but offered few hints about future easing as lingering inflation clouds the outlook.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said on Friday that recent foreign exchange intervention was conducted to contain excessive volatility, but such action should be done in a restrained manner.
"Foreign exchange intervention should be done with its necessity and effectiveness taken into account," Suzuki said, speaking in a regular post-cabinet meeting news conference.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Oil prices rose on Friday, continuing to climb after OPEC+ members Saudi Arabia and Russia indicated readiness to pause or reverse output agreements and as an interest rate cut in Europe raised the prospect of a similar U.S. move.
Brent crude futures rose 16 cents or 0.2% to $80.03 per barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 16 cents or 0.2% to $75.71 as at 0007 GMT.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russia and China, which hold veto powers in the U.N. Security Council, raised concerns on Thursday with a U.S. draft resolution that would back a proposal - outlined by President Joe Biden - for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas.

(Reuters) - A federal appeals court panel on Thursday ordered that eight of 17 books that had been removed from a Texas library's shelves over conservatives' complaints that they were inappropriate must be returned.
