LONDON (Reuters) - British defence minister Grant Shapps said on Sunday he was very concerned about a recent strengthening of diplomatic relations between China's Xi Jinping and Russia's Vladimir Putin, saying it posed a threat to democracy.

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Uganda's military has captured a commander of an Islamic State-allied rebel group who is an expert in making improvised explosive devices, or bombs, that the group has used to carry out deadly attacks in the past, the army said on Sunday.

PARIS (Reuters) - France has mobilised hundreds of police to regain control of the main road linking the airport to New Caledonia capital Noumea and restore order after days of unrest, the French minister of interior Gerald Darmanin said in a post on X late on Saturday.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian officials said on Sunday that Ukraine fired nine U.S. ATACMS at Crimea and attacked Russian regions with at least 60 drones in a major attack which forced one oil refinery in southern Russia to halt operations.
Russian air defences shot down nine U.S. ATACMS missiles over Crimea along with 57 drones over Russia's Krasnodar region and three drones over Belgorod region, the Russian defence ministry said.

KYIV (Reuters) - Ukraine's forces have destroyed all of 37 attack drones launched by Russia overnight, Ukraine's Air Force chief said on Sunday.
"As a result of the anti-aircraft battle, all 37 'Shaheds' were shot down in Kyiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Cherkasy and Kherson regions," the commander said.
Odesa governor Oleh Kiper said on the telegram messaging app that 20 drones were destroyed in the Odesa region.
