Russian guided bombs kill two in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, governor says May 1, 2024 04:53AM

KYIV (Reuters) - Russia attacked the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine with guided bombs on Wednesday, killing at least two people and wounding two others, the regional governor said.

The two people were killed when a car was struck in the village of Zolochiv, where a private home was also hit, governor Oleh Syniehubov said on the Telegram messaging app.

(Reuters) - European shipping firms Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are unlikely to get a big boost from soaring freight rates due to the Red Sea crisis in the first quarter, reinforcing worries about overcapacity in the long run.

Hamas official says Blinken ceasefire comments are attempt to pressure the group May 1, 2024 04:49AM

CAIRO (Reuters) - Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said on Wednesday that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is blaming the delay of a Gaza ceasefire agreement on the Palestinian group unfairly.

Blinken, meeting Israeli leaders to discuss how to get more aid into Gaza, has repeatedly urged Hamas to accept an offer from Israel that will release hostages and achieve a ceasefire, describing it as "extraordinarily generous".

Dollar near five-month highs ahead of Fed policy decision May 1, 2024 04:46AM

LONDON (Reuters) - The dollar edged towards its highest level this year against a basket of peers and U.S. share futures dipped on Wednesday ahead of a Federal Reserve policy decision, though trading was thin with many European and Asian markets closed.

The dollar gained over 0.5% on Tuesday on all six currencies that make up the dollar index, leaving the gauge at 106.49, a whisker off its highest since November.
